Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is an advanced massage technique that stimulates the lymphatic system with a series of gentle, rhythmical, wave-like movements along the lymphatic vessels and surrounding tissues to help the flow of lymph towards the heart thus reducing swelling and removing congestion and stagnation in the affected area.
 

The technique was developed by a Danish medical doctor Emil Vodder in 1932. Vodder and his fellow colleagues Prof. Dr. Földi (Germany), Leduc (Belgium), Casey-Smith (Australia) researched and developed the medical branch called Lymphology.

Manual lymphatic drainage has now been adapted by medical professionals around the world to treat patients with swollen necks or limbs due to poor lymph flow and all stages of lymphoedema and lipoedema. Dr. Vodder was able to show that many chronic conditions could be alleviated with lymphatic drainage and massage techniques.

is critical to our body's ability to operate at peak performance. This system drains fluids, detoxifies and regenerates tissues, filters out toxins and foreign substances and helps us maintain a healthy immune system.

When lymphatic tissues or lymph nodes have been damaged, destroyed or removed, lymph cannot drain normally from the affected area. The lymph circulation will stagnate, toxins will accumulate, and swellings will appear and compromise cellular functioning, which opens the way to physical ailments.

How does MLD work?

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a specialised form of therapy which is designed to improve the functions of the lymphatic system.

The specific movements used in MLD treatments allow the superficial lymph vessels to reabsorb excess fluid, metabolic waste, large protein molecules and foreign substances from the tissues.

The aim of the treatment is to encourage protein reabsorption and stimulate lymphatic flow opening up pathways, improving the lymph drainage away from the congested areas.

The lymphatic fluid is then encouraged to empty into the deep lymphatic vessels and filtered through series of lymph nodes along its route before it is returned to the blood circulatory system in the neck area.
